The Benefits of Roundabouts

AAA recently predicted that more than 103 million people will travel during the year-end holidays and that 93.6 million of them will get to their holiday destinations by car. Those statistics made everyone at our Los Angeles, CA Audi dealership think about some of the things we’ve seen during our own road trips. One thing that came to mind was roundabouts. While you may not have a roundabout in your hometown, roundabouts are becoming increasingly common as municipalities throughout the nation look for creative solutions to congested roads.

While roundabouts may be new to some communities, there were first used by Europeans more than 150 years ago. The first roundabouts to appear in America were built in the early 1900s. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, roundabouts have provided life-saving benefits ever since they were introduced on American soil.

The IIHS reports that traditional intersections that used traffic lights or stop signs which were converted into roundabouts experienced as much as 80 percent fewer accident-related injuries. The converted intersections also saw a drop of as much as 50 percent in accidents overall. An IIHS study revealed that if 10 percent of every community’s conventional intersections were replaced with roundabouts, almost 50,000 crashes could have been prevented in 2014, crashes which resulted in 189 fatalities and 31,000 injuries.

The IIHS’s study also showed that delays at intersections that were converted to roundabouts dropped between 13 and 89 percent and stops dropped between 14 and 56 percent per intersection. Roundabouts also help with fuel consumption and emissions. Roundabouts require a third less fuel and they cut emissions by as much as 44 percent. Another benefit that roundabouts bring to the table is that they are less expensive to maintain and last about 2.5 times longer than intersections with traffic lights do.
